Trending: '80s-influenced skiwear

The metallics and bright colors the decade is known for are making a comeback.

There was nothing restrained about fashion trends in the 1980s. Embellishments were big (think: all those zippers on parachute pants) and everything from sweaters to handbags sparkled with sequins while colors were bold and blocky. Now, that playful flamboyancy has returned—to the slopes.

“I missed the glamour of skiing that I remember from the ‘80s,” says Erin Isakov, founder, designer, and CEO of Erin Snow, which revived the stirrup-style, in-the-boot ski pants a decade ago. “Magazines made fun of me for doing it, saying it’s a trend that died and should never come back,” she recalls. But this winter, many designers are offering similar versions. “We’re seeing a lot more sexiness come back to the sport,” adds Isakov. For instance, metallic fabrics recall the decade's love of lamé gowns. And there’s no slowdown in sight: Previews of the ’17-’18 lines reveal even more ‘80s influence.
