The science behind your silverware

How the size and shape of cutlery can alter your perception of food.

What you know: a smaller plate can help you consume less. What you don't: the utensils alongside it can alter the way your food actually tastes. A recent study published by the online journal Flavourfound that the taste of food is affected by the weight, size, shape, and color of the cutlery used to eat it. Take cheese, for instance. It tasted saltier when eaten with a knife. Or yogurt, which was perceived as more dense and expensive when eaten with a lighter spoon, sweeter with a smaller spoon, and less sweet with a black spoon. Please your palate accordingly.
